They have the right to set their own rules because they are an international sporting body, recognized by the IOC (International Olympic Committee), which sets the standards and rules for international basketball.

FIBA was founded in 1932 and is actually older than the NBA, which started from several leagues that merged in the 1940s. So obviously, they didn't invent the game or its governing rules/standards.

To be precise, basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a Canadian teaching phys-ed at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. He also served as the honorary president of FIBA in 1936.

Also, the NBA isn't the only basketball league that is out there in the world (it does happen to be the biggest and the most high profile). There are many professional and amateur leagues all around the globe. To say that all of these leagues should adopt NBA standards is both arrogant and foolish. Club leagues, like the NBA have different sets of rules which are designed to shape control the game in a certain way, usually according to the particular style of play the league wants to see. For example, look at some of the differences between the NBA and the NCAA (three point line distance, 35 second shot clock, etc.). The NBA puts a higher emphasis on fast-paced scoring than the NCAA, and has tailored its rules/standards in a way that uses its players and their talent on the court to try to foster this type of gameplay.

FIBA sets international rules/standards so that everyone who plays basketball in the world has something to go by when they come together and play in a big international event such as the Olympics and the Olympic Qualifying tournaments.

Adopting the NBA rules/standards for these events would create an unfair andvantage for NBA players and a bias towards the NBA style of play.

NBA didn't create the game. They created their own rules however. Rules that were taken from NCAA rules, which are very similar to FIBA rules. FIBA rules make the game flow much smoother. For example, the last 15 seconds of an NBA game can last 10 minutes with all of the time-outs coaches save for end of game situations. Meanwhile in FIBA, the last 1 minute of a game can last 5 minutes. I think that is much better. Also there is no defensive 3 seconds which is the dumbest rule ever especially since the NBA allows Zone defence. HOW IS IT A ZONE DEFENCE IF YOU CAN'T HAVE A GUY IN THE MIDDLE!

Why should FIBA have the right to change them?

It is the fact that, why do the American leagues (NBA, ABA, NCAA, etc..) all go with American rules, when the rest of the world plays with FIBA rules (except for parts of Canada's basketball system, but Canada is planning to go entirely FIBA as well, I know I ref in Canada)

Why does NBA have their own rules? Because it is a business! They want to make the game as exciting for the fans as possible so they gain more money. Once again the Defensive 3 in the key comes into play. It was put in so the high-flyers can get easy dunks on people trying to come from the other side of the paint. The games are longer so that they get more air time meaning commercial revenue, and you can force the game to be in the 100's if the game is 8 minutes longer. NCAA has 20 minutes halves and it is way more exciting than the NBA, is there a problem with those rules? No. FIBA rules make them game more enjoyable to watch as their are less time-outs, no overdone player intros, and the game becomes more free-flowing. FIBA rules are better for the good of basketball than the NBA's. Enough said.

That doesn't make sense, you are going to change the rules everywhere so that 12 American players can have an easier time at playing the game. Mean while all the other international players will have a tougher time playing the game because they have to adjust from the rules they have always played with....how is that fair? Anything to help out the now over-rated USA Basketball team. The Dream Team won easily with those FIBA rules as well.
